The cause of the blaze was not yet determined but an Horry County Fire Rescue spokesman said that the fire started around noon on Wednesday in some woods about six miles east of Conway.

Worsening the the situation, the fire spread to Carolina Bays, geographic structures of organic material that fuel the blaze and burn for a very long time.

Firefighters hope that the Intracoastal Waterway, or ICW,  will act as a natural barrier to keep the Horry County fires from spreading to the more densely populated areas of Myrtle Beach.
