The 101-year-old Chinese woman who grew a single devil-like horn from her forehead has confirmed that she’s now growing a matching one on the other side of her head – and says that she’s looking forward to it.

Zhang Ruifang first noticed the horn on the left side of her forehead developing in 2009 – and it’s now around nearing three inches in length.

And she says that doctors have now confirmed earlier suspicions that she’s now developing a similar growth on the right side of her forehead.

Zhang says she’s turned down offers to have them removed – because the 101-year old says she’s never had so many well-wishers and visitors at her home in Linlou, eastern China.

“At first it was a nuisance sleeping and so on, but now I get people visiting me all the time bringing me food and gifts and asking to take my picture.”

“I had some doctors who said they would cut it off for free but I told them no. In fact I’m quite looking forward to when the matching one has grown a bit,’”she explained.

Youngest son Zhang Guozheng, 60, said he and his five brothers have given up trying to persuade their mother to have them removed.

He said: ‘She is on her own a lot of time and we didn’t pay much attention to it until too late and by then she seemed to be quite attached to leaving them there.’

The growths are likely to be ‘cutaneous horns’ – growths made of keratin, the same substance that makes up fingernails.

Although most cutaneous horns are less than an inch in length, some can extend a number of inches from the skin.

The lawsuit claims Connie Plumlee was accidentally set on fire during breast reconstructive surgery at Saint John Medical Center last December.

The suit says a cauterizing tool sparked the fire after Dr. Brad Garber used alcohol to swab Plumlee’s chest before the medical procedure.

“When I first woke up in recovery, a gentleman was standing over me and said, ‘Do you know what happened?’ He had tears in his eyes and I said, ‘Surgery.’ I was so sedated. He goes, ‘You were burned,’ and that stuck with me,” Plumlee told reporters.

Four months after the botched surgery, Plumlee said she is still in immense pain. As a result of the fire, her face and lips are deformed; and she said she needs “constant medical care” and may need more surgery.

An attorney for Dr. Garber said they could not comment on the lawsuit.

Newlyweds Marissa Putignano-Keene, 22, and groom, Timothy Keene, 37, were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after trying to run down his ex-girlfriend and her son with the bride behind the wheel of their car.

According to the Cape Cod police report on the incident, Putignano-Keene and Keene told the police they were married at the Town Hall and afterwards split a bottle of champagne.

Later, as Putignano-Keene drove through the North Street parking lot, she spotted a woman familiar to her husband because she had been dating the groom when the newlywed couple met.

That woman told the police she had just left work and was cutting through the parking lot, accompanied by her son, when the newlywed couple drove by.

The woman told the police Putignano-Keene rolled down the driver’s side window and began swearing and using sexually charged language.

The woman said she and her son were walking away when she heard a car engine roar and the newlyweds car heading directly toward them, causing them to jump out of the way.

She said Putignano-Keene then backed the car up, turned around and tried to run them down again before losing control and crashing into a fence.

The ensuing melee between the bride and the groom’s ex-girlfriend quickly drew a crowd and the attention of a passing patrol car.

The police handcuffed the newlyweds, then took the bride and her new husband to jail where they spent their wedding night in separate cells.

Police said the bride – who was wearing a tiara at the time of her arrest! – was asked her to remove it for the mug shot.

The bride was arraigned on charges including two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and vandalism.

The groom was also charged with disorderly conduct and taken into protective custody. Keene is a Level 2 registered sex offender who was convicted of lewd and lascivious behavior in 2000.

Sounds like the bride and groom deserve each other…

That could be an unhealthy attitude as these same people tend not to exercise and have many risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The study, based on survey data collected in Dallas, found that one in 10 participants – all of whom were classified as obese – were satisfied with their body size and didn’t think they needed to lose a few pounds.

“That is a sizeable percentage who don’t understand they are overweight and believe they are healthy,” said lead researcher Tiffany Powell, a cardiology fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Either way, obesity packs many negative health effects, including increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

In the study, Powell and her colleagues focused on 2,056 individuals who were obese and took part in the Dallas Heart Study. They had an average age of about 40.

Participants looked at nine sex-specific figures (outlines of bodies, with the first showing the slimmest figure and increasing up to the ninth and largest) and chose what they thought they looked like and their ideal figure.

Studies on Caucasians have shown a score of 4 is lean, while a 6 indicates a body mass index, or BMI, of 30.

BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and indicates body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A score of 30 or above is considered obese; 25 to 29.9 overweight; 18.5 to 24.9 normal; and below 18.5 is considered underweight.

About 8 percent of the obese participants indicated they thought their body size was smaller than reality.

Such individuals, considered to have body-size misperceptions, said they thought their bodies looked like a 4 on the figure scale on average, with an ideal body size of about 5.

Other participants were more on target, choosing an average of 6 for current body size and just under a 4 for ideal.

In reality, participants who were unaware they were obese had an average BMI of nearly 35, while the others had a BMI of nearly 37.

Those with a misperception of body size believed they were healthy. But 35 percent of them had high blood pressure, 15 percent had high cholesterol, 14 percent had diabetes and 27 percent were current smokers.

If both groups of obese participants have health risks, why does it matter whether they know it or not? Isn’t ignorance bliss?

Other unhealthy behaviors researchers found include:

Participants who didn’t think they were obese were less likely to go to a physician, with 44 percent saying they hadn’t visited a doctor in the past year, compared with 26 percent of those without body misperceptions saying the same.

Among those who had a doctor visit, nearly 40 percent of the people with misperceptions about body size said their doctor mentioned they needed to lose weight. That’s compared with about 70 percent of those in the know about their obesity.

Obese people who were satisfied with their body size didn’t exercise on average, while others who recognized they had a weight problem exercised regularly.

A small number of patients have reported permanent damage to their eyes following Lasik surgery, including double vision, dry eye and halos around objects at night.

The FDA says it will work with the National Eye Institute and the Department of Defense to determine the percentage of patients who experience negative side effects following surgery.

The first phase of the project is already under way, with plans for an online questionnaire to help patients gauge their quality of life following surgery, according to an FDA statement.

The project will also include a clinical trial tracking patients who undergo the procedure, which is expected to conclude by 2012.

“This study will enhance our understanding of the risks of Lasik and could lead to a reduction in patients who experience adverse effects,” said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the acting head of FDA’s medical device division.

An estimated 6 million Americans have undergone Lasik surgery, which permanently reshapes the cornea, a clear layer covering the eye. There are no guarantees of 20/20 vision and the long-term safety of the procedure is still unknown.

Ophthalmology societies report that about 95 percent of patients are satisfied with their new vision.

The FDA agreed to look into the problems in 2008 after years of complaints. The agency said last summer it received 140 reports of Lasik-related problems between 1998 and 2006.

Lasik procedures have fallen off in the past year as consumers cut back on the pricey surgeries, which can cost between $1,500 and $5,000

Makers of Lasik lasers include Advanced Medical Optics Inc., Alcon Inc., and Bausch and Lomb.

Also on Thursday, the FDA announced warning letters sent to 17 Lasik surgery centers for inadequate adverse event reporting procedures. Regulators periodically send letters to facilities that don’t follow federal guidelines for reporting patient complaints.

“The inspections did not identify problems with the use of the Lasik devices at these facilities,” the FDA stated.

More inspections of Lasik centers are planned in coming months, according to the FDA release.
